There are a host of facilities for the holiday maker in the vicinity of De Novo Lodge.
For the fisherman the majestic Umtamvuna River which is just a short distance away, boasts an array of fish, and for the powerboat enthusiast there are launching facilities at the Umtamvuna caravan park.
The Umtamvuna River is the only river in Natal that still permits the use of jet skis. Those who are more inclined to quieter water sports can windsurf. A tranquil canoe trip up the river, into the protected reserve, often rewards the visitor with a view of the resident fish eagles.
The more energetic holiday makers can choose from a number of
hikes though the reserve, into the gorge and up or down the mountains. Hikes can take from as little as ½ an hour to eight hours.
A trip on the Banana Express steam train or a tour of the Beaver Creek Coffee Farm is a pleasant way to spend the day and no trip to the South Coast would be complete without a visit to the Blue Lagoon Waffle House in Ramsgate!
The Riverbend Crocodile Farm is also a must and there is a number of craft and farm stalls, with the best by far being Ilva's, only 5km from the Port Edward traffic lights.
Oribi Gorge, about 40 minutes away, offers abseiling, a gorge swing and white water rafting and Scuba Divers can dive the Protea Banks at Shelley Beach.
A short way away is the Port Edward beach, known as Silver Beach, which has full time lifeguards and has wonderful surf for swimming, as well as a water slide.
Other excellent beaches are also within close proximity. The Port Edward Country Club welcomes holiday makers and you can enjoy a game of tennis, squash or golf, all at very reasonable prices.
The lodge is a short drive from the internationally recognised Wild Coast Sun Casino Resort and for the golf enthusiast - there are 10 professional golf courses, which includes the Wild Coast, Selbourne, Southbroom and San Lameer in the vicinity.
Some inexpensive and fun activities such as snorkelling, deep-sea and off-shore fishing and surfing is a must. Absailing, horse riding, bowls, 10-pin bowling, arcade games and other activities can also be enjoyed in the area.
Visit the various nature reserves such as the Oribi Gorge
and the Mpenjati Nature Reserve with its interlinking wetlands, grasslands and dunes.
